UK MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

 

According to a survey of 50 major UK retailers and 1,000 British consumers, cross-border trade in the UK is expected to increase by 57% this Christmas to £1.4m in retail sales and foreign citizens purchasing from UK-based stores will make up one third (33.3%) of total European sales this Christmas.

In addition, total Christmas spending in the UK is also predicted to reach £78.7bn this year, up 1.4% from 2016 (£77.6 bn).

Looking at a new survey from the retail agency Savvy, more than a quarter of UK consumers expect to do some online shopping on Christmas Day.

 

KEY PLAYERS

 

Westfield announced this month it is bought by Paris-based Unibail-Rodamco for £18.5 billion. The deal will create a combined global estate worthing £54 billion. The announcement came just a week after Westfield’s biggest UK shopping centre rival, Intu, announced a £3.4 billion deal with property giant Hammerson, inorder to create the UK’s largest property companies with a value of £21 billion.

Ocado Solutions announced this month its first international deal with Casino in France (see our article on this topic here). Casino group (£ 31.7bn turnover in 2016) is teaming up with the online-only UK grocer and tech provider and the alliance aims to develop Casino online sales, starting with one of its subsidiaries: Monoprix.

In December, Amazon Fashion has unveiled its debut campaign for its in-house lingerie brand Iris & Lilly. The new collection from the brand is currently available at Amazon.co.uk and includes more than 500 styles. One more Amazon’s foray into the fashion industry.
