UK MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

According to the latest MasterCard SpendingPulse report, online spending grew by 11.5% in December. It suggested that retail spending during the Christmas holiday month was up by 2.2% compared to last year, with sales increasing fast just before December 25th.

For the first time, UK Ecommerce purchases made via smartphone overtook the ones made on tablets. Purchases made on smartphone represented a 49.7% of all Mcommerce sales in the UK in 2017. So technically it isn’t more than half of all Mcommerce sales, however thanks to online sales happening from old school feature phones, the smartphone is indeed more popular than the tablet: this device now accounts for 49.4% of Mcommerce sales in the UK.

KEY PLAYERS

Westfield has revealed that 14.1 million shoppers visited its Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City shopping centres over the Christmas period, an overall increase of 1% compared to 2016.

Tesco was the best performing grocer over the Christmas period. Indeed they recorded an increase in sales of 3.1% in the 3-month period ending on December 31st. It’s worth noticing that Tesco is beating its rivals Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons in terms of sales growth since June.

Ocado continues to innovate to reduce its reliance on human workers as they are set to start testing a humanoid robot in its warehouses that will assist human engineers. The robot “SecondHands” will assist engineers working on supply chain and using artificial intelligence to predict needs. It comes after Ocado relaesed last year its robot “SoMa” (“soft manipulation” project) as well as announced trials of self-driving delivery trucks.
